Usually at illuminate gym we see a little slowing in new client signings during the holiday season. However, this January has been completely different in our Denver location. We have seen more clients coming in to sign up for our ‘High Oxygen Training’ sessions than ever before. We are very hopeful as a company that is a small sign of a turn for our nation’s economy as 2008 we saw an explosion in the financial markets and 2009 was full of uncertainty. at illuminate gym our personal trainers and business model has been successful over the past 2 years and we weathered the storm where many others did not. Our commitment to personal training, the fitness industry and providing customers with a new fitness experience unlike any other has helped our business continue to grow in Colorado and even beyond.
We are convinced at illuminate gym that our continued dedication will help our company grow and as we teach people the trade secrets of the illuminate gym model they will also find success through our business model. In my family we celebrate Christmas and though it’s always a fun holiday I find myself looking more toward the first of January. This is a time for us all to reflect on the year before and look forward to the year ahead of us. I know years ago I was on my way to opening the first illuminate gym and I made the New Year’s resolution to become a successful entrepreneur. By April I had made my goal a reality. Everyone is very concerned about the economy today. Real estate prices are uncertain and banks still aren’t loaning out money and because of this on a daily basis we hear that people just aren’t sure about starting up a new business. Now at illuminate gym we know it’s always a risk to start a new business but we also see that there is a lot of opportunity for new entrepreneurs in our current economy. People always ask how there could be a lot of opportunity in being an entrepreneur at this time. Well within the illuminate gym model we have found that there is a ton of opportunity in opening your own fitness franchise and we are finding creative ways to make our fitness franchise one of the most affordable fitness franchises in America. Now as franchisors this has created more work for us and less money but since the inception of the illuminate gym model are focus has always been on helping our franchisees and perspective franchisees as much as possible. Currently, as we move forward with a few active franchisees we have never seen such leverage on our negotiations on real estate and equipment acquisition. This economy will turn around and many experts believe the fitness industry is a recession proof business and we have statistics that prove this fact as illuminate gym is still doing as well as it ever did even with the slow in the economy. Many people within the illuminate gym model are making sacrifices in their lives like where they entertain themselves or how they feed themselves. However, many of our clients are not willing to sacrifice their fitness over a bad economy because the old saying ‘you don’t have anything if you don’t have your health’ is as true today as the day the phrase was coined. At illuminate gym we show our customers the value in being a part of illuminate gym. We also show them physical results in weight loss, lowering of blood pressure, lowering in cholesterol, and a better self esteem. These are the things we have focused on which make us a part of people’s lives they just don’t want to give up. That’s why we believe this is a perfect storm for people to build a successful illuminate gym in their community.

Over the last couple weeks we have been working very hard to get one of our franchisees’ lease completed. There were a few hang ups on the deal as the HVAC system and a few other issues with the space were not quite up to par with the illuminate gym standards. Late yesterday we were informed that the landlord was okay with making the appropriate changes to the space and they also warrantied the HVAC system for our future franchisee.
This is an exciting time for our franchisee as they begin to look forward at the beginning of their career as an illuminate gym owner. At the end of the day we all feel confident in what we have done as a franchise to help our franchisee get the best real estate deal possible. The real estate deals out their in our current economy is incredible because today future tenants have more leverage than I have ever seen. Many people look at this time as a scary time to start a business but as an entrepreneur I believe there has never been a better opportunity to take hold of an opportunity of a lifetime. When the market completely turn in 2010 the deals we are seeing now will no longer exist. A business is an investment just like the stock market. And just like the stock market it’s bad to start making your investments when the market is at its highest point. In other words, I don’t think there has ever been a better time to buy into a franchise unit. Over the past month illuminate gym has begun to develop a higher end exercise clothing line for our clients. This clothing line will be available in the future online and in our franchise locations across the country. Look for the clothing line very soon online or in an illuminate gym near you. This is another example of how we can help our franchisees make more money. We are very excited about the future of both illuminate gym and the illuminate clothing line so our clients can workout in style. Currently, illuminate gym has no desire of pushing the line into major department stores or any other outlets besides online or in our franchise locations.

An important question perspective franchisees should be asking franchisors is how many people within their franchise unit are interested in their business model. Quite honestly if the franchise has been around for a long time then there should be some people directly involved with the business who are willing to invest in the franchise or you probably should think twice about investing your money into the franchise model. So remember when speaking to a franchisor or a franchise executive ask them… “How many of your employees or former customers have become franchisees?” This question will throw a lot of franchisors off for a moment but you should insist to hear the answer. Think about it… Customers and employees are the ones who have experienced the franchise unit you are about to buy into first hand. If not one customer or employee believes in the business’ potential then you may want to do your homework before you start investing your own money into the franchise.

It’s one of our jobs here at illuminate gym to keep up with the trends in the fitness franchise world. To us it’s still strange to see that the fitness industry is so slow to change it’s ways even though the world around is changing at the speed of light. The franchise industry as a whole is moving very quickly to the new way of advertising and aproaching the computer as a whole. My theory is that their is far less competition in the fitness franchise world than there is in the food franchise business making it easier for fitness franchises to get away with more. However, here at illuminate gym our goal is to stay on the cutting edge for both our franchisees and our personal trainers to ensure we connect with as many perspective customers as we can. It’s important that the franchise unit you chose is committed to helping you connect with as many people in your community which is very important this day in age. And let’s be honest the days of newspaper ads are over.
