So you’re interested in opening your own fitness franchise but you’re not sure what direction to go in. I’ve been the fitness industry for a long time and the one consistent I can tell you is you have to be able to diversify your product in such a way that it will never be considered taboo or out of style. First and foremost we stick with the basics in our model… Gyms have been around for over 60 years and they’re not going anywhere. Now many of you boxing enthusiasts are about to jump all over this blog by saying that boxing gyms have been around just as long. That is true however, you have to know that boxing gyms were meant for serious boxers and wayward adolescent boys until recent times. Boxing gyms were for boxing not losing weight and getting more fit.
Back to my point…. At illuminate gym we are able to accommodate a lot of different types of fitness avenues such as, cardiovascular training, Pilates, and yes even boxing. In fact, our newest franchisee is a former professional boxer as was his brother. He has been involved with boxing gyms his whole life yet he sees the power in working with a gym with as many options as illuminate gym offers. Our number one goal at Illuminate Gym Development Company is to make sure our franchisees build a successful business in their communities. The question is as a franchisor how can you create a good working relationship with your franchisees without over stepping your boundaries with the franchise owners while still providing the best franchise support possible. Our focus at illuminate gym is to ensure that our support to our franchisees is the best in the fitness franchise world. Before offering illuminate gym as a franchise opportunity we did some major market research on the complaints of failed franchisees and we were shocked by the response we got…. The number one complaint we found that franchisees had about their relationship with franchisors was that the relationship didn’t exist. Once their doors were opened the support from the franchisor was basically gone. At illuminate gym our goal is to offer around the clock support to franchisees in need of guidance on how to create a successful fitness franchise.
We also have made a very deliberate change in the dynamic of the franchisee and franchisor relationship. Many franchisors act as if the franchisee works for the franchisor. At illuminate gym we are organized in such a way that the franchisor works for the franchisee. Every month royalties and the initial franchise fee is payment for the franchisee to essentially employ illuminate gym development company to support them with advisement, legal help, accounting help and of course marketing help. This way the franchisee can demand support right from the beginning rather than getting lost in the shuffle with the franchisors efforts to sell more franchisees. At illuminate gym our main focus right now is to build a successful brand which means improving upon our business model all the time. We’re changing the rules in the franchise world and we couldn’t be more excited about our new concept on fitness and the fitness franchise.

The newest illuminate gym in Greenwood Village is right around the corner from its ‘Grand Opening’ on April 2. Earlier this week the sign went up over the front door (which you will see very soon this week), all the equipment is in place and now our franchisees are hard at work with our support getting new clients into the facility. We couldn’t be more excited about the future for our franchisee as they have the drive and the desire to make illuminate gym a great success in Greenwood Village. Something interesting about the newest illuminate gym is they provide personal training using our ‘High Oxygen Trianing’ principles but they also have a variety of different Yoga/Pilates/Group Exercise classes. As a franchise begins to grow it finds itself in a very interesting position where communication becomes key in the success of its franchisees. Now communication is a two way street in the franchise world. A lot of times if you Google the horrors many franchisees complain about on the web you will see that franchisors have been the ones who are the ones who are hard pressed to communicate and support their franchisees effectively. Now it’s true I can’t confirm that these franchise ‘development companies’ have not given the proper support to their franchises but I think it’s fair to say that where there is smoke there is usually fire. At illuminate gym we have found that it can be a challenge to be too involved with our franchisees’ business because they don’t feel that they have independence from us. However, we feel that communication on both ends is the most important part of a franchise relationship. If you are unable to communicate with each other you are opening yourself to fall into the trap of not creating a strong franchise unit. The franchisor has the wisdom and the resources to teach the franchisee the trick to operating a successful franchise unit. The franchisee should have the drive and desire to not only run the system but also to become an innovator who actually pushed the franchise unit to evolve into something more. Evolution cannot occur though without collaboration and communication with the franchiser/franchisor and the franchisee. So if you’re interested in getting into a fitness franchise or any franchise for that matter you should make sure that the lines of communication are open between you and the franchisor to ensure that you have the best opportunity for success.

Illuminate Gym would like to release a statement that we are currently in talks with a supplement manufacturer because we are looking to create a custom line of supplements for our franchisees and customers of Illuminate Gym. This has always been a long term goal for us here at Illuminate Gym but in the recent history it’s been tough for us to find consistency in price and ingredients for a lot of the supplements we carry at Illuminate Gym and we are convinced that our customers deserve better as we move forward into our ‘franchise development’. Supplements are multi-billion dollar a year industry in the United States and the world and we are interested in maintaining a group of supplements in a way that make sure our customers don’t fall victim to false marketing and promises about results from a variety of protein supplements. We have also had some growing concerns about the consistency of ingredients in every bottle of these nutritional products especially because we are pushing them on our customers.
There is not timeline on the development of our supplement line but we are committed to start looking in the direction of creating our own supplement line and we are yet to even begin any talks about marketing a new ‘brand’. For years the supplement companies out there have been capitalizing on the fitness industry by pushing false promises and hopes of bulging muscles and pumping veins. We have all thumbed through a fitness magazine and those of us familiar with the industry can tell when a magazine is merely a marketing tool for the wealthiest of supplement companies. The question on many of our client’s minds at illuminate gym is how do you tell if a supplement is right for you and how can you tell if a supplement does what it really says it does. There are a million different weight loss pills and mass gaining protein powders out there that really do nothing. Just the other day a personal trainer at the illuminate gym in Denver approached me while I met with management in a back office to ask me about a particular protein bar. The client using the bar wanted to gain some serious muscle. After reading the back of the protein bar I handed back to our customer and told him ‘you can get this by eating a half of a chicken breast and a snickers…. It would probably be cheaper and taste better too.’ The client was shocked I would say such a thing but covering 15 grams of protein with sugar and chocolate hardly makes up a wonder supplement that will help this particular client pack on the muscle he desires. Sure there was a picture of torso on the front of the bar that showed a lean bodybuilder who had obviously used steroids for quite some time, but it didn’t mean anything. Believe it or not these supplement companies will lie to you in order to get your money. (I know it’s shocking).
Then there are those diet pills…. Oh those pesky diet pills… You know the ones with the people on the front who have dropped 30 pounds, found their smile and got a tan just from using these wonder drugs. These are my favorite supplements because this day in age many of them are just a solid form of a Red Bull equipped with caffeine and Ginseng. It’s true way back when ephedrine, aspirin, and a caffeine pill (commonly referred to as ‘the stack’) did wonders for people trying to lose weight until we figured out that ephedrine was actually an amphetamine…. Yeah believe it or not you’ll lose weight doing Cocaine too.
The bottom line is there are a lot of options out there and it’s important to have a fitness professional on your side who can guide you through your supplement use to ensure that you are not going to harm yourself and that you are getting what you need out of what you put in your body. And don’t get me wrong we sell a lot of supplements at illuminate gym. We just always ensure that they are legit before we offer them to our clientele. When the illuminate gym logo was born in 2005 it was looked at by many people in such a way that it may be to simple for our objectives. “It looks too generic,” some would say. And there is some truth that the simplicity of our logo is apparent. It says ‘gym’ with a sunburst. However, rest assured that though our logo seems so simplistic it was very deliberate in our company’s franchise development for two very important reasons.
1. The first reason is because we wanted to ensure that when our logo ends up on a sign there is no doubt what kind of business we are. And trust me our facilities on the busiest streets in America are seen and understood in the slightest of moments. At illuminate gym we feel this is very important because your sign can be one of your greatest marketing tools especially early on in your business development. If you logo is to busy or complex that split second when you need to convey a message to your perspective customers could be lost.
2. The second reason we designed the illuminate gym logo was to ensure that we would have the opportunity to spread the illuminate gym franchise internationally. The word ‘gym’ and a tribal sun translates into every country in the world. Today we are currently in conversations about bringing our franchise opportunity to India and the Middle East. It has always been our goal to help entrepreneurs all around the world to create low-cost fitness franchises to help their communities become more fit while making a profit too.

Earlier this week while speaking to a client I realized that there is another explosion in the membership gym franchise world in certain parts of the country. I myself visited a new location on the East Coast which is based on another fitness franchise where memberships are sold at a cost of $9.00 a month. I walked into the facility and I asked if there was a daily membership fee and I was quickly told there was not so I paid for a day pass, which ended up costing me the entire monthly fee of $9.00 which was fine. When I walked into the facility I found that there were only 4 treadmills, 2 ellipticals, and 3 exercise bikes. To a person who has been involved in the fitness world for awhile this seemed to be a low number of cardiovascular pieces to have a membership gym.
I worked out at the facility and I watched as there weren’t too many people making there way into the facility at 6 PM. That’s when I started crunching the numbers in my head…. How much would it take this membership gym to get off of the ground and make money? Then I looked back over the small gym space and I realized that like most membership gyms the owners had to be hopeful that the majority of their members don’t show up, because there just isn’t enough room.
At Illuminate Gym our committment is to keep people motivated to continue to use our facility. Results = Client Retention and Client Retention = Successful Business. Now I am very aware as a fitness entrepreneur that membershp gyms can be a very lucrative businesses. However, with a membership facility you have to realize that there is very little if any human connection. The connection is to the facility which means if a newer more trendy option presents itself you may see your membership numbers drop drastically. At Illuminate Gym our clients connection is with the personal training staff and fitness professionals. Our business relationship with our clients is so much more than just an open gym floor…. The magic of Illuminate Gym is in the personal relationships we have with our clientele. We are directly connected with the success of our clients and we are motivated to make Illuminate Gym a safe place for people to persue their fitness goals.

Illuminate Gym has been working for the past month to get registered to sell franchises in the state of Michigan. Many people have thought that growing a business in the state of Michigan may be a tough task but at Illuminate Gym we feel there is a real opportunity for our franchise model to grow in Michigan because of all the real estate leverage we feel we have in the state. We also see large communities for people who really care about fitness in the state which is ideal for a franchise like Illuminate Gym.
