Earlier this week while speaking to a client I realized that there is another explosion in the membership gym franchise world in certain parts of the country. I myself visited a new location on the East Coast which is based on another fitness franchise where memberships are sold at a cost of $9.00 a month. I walked into the facility and I asked if there was a daily membership fee and I was quickly told there was not so I paid for a day pass, which ended up costing me the entire monthly fee of $9.00 which was fine. When I walked into the facility I found that there were only 4 treadmills, 2 ellipticals, and 3 exercise bikes. To a person who has been involved in the fitness world for awhile this seemed to be a low number of cardiovascular pieces to have a membership gym.
I worked out at the facility and I watched as there weren’t too many people making there way into the facility at 6 PM. That’s when I started crunching the numbers in my head…. How much would it take this membership gym to get off of the ground and make money? Then I looked back over the small gym space and I realized that like most membership gyms the owners had to be hopeful that the majority of their members don’t show up, because there just isn’t enough room.

Now I am very aware as a fitness entrepreneur that membershp gyms can be a very lucrative businesses. However, with a membership facility you have to realize that there is very little if any human connection. The connection is to the facility which means if a newer more trendy option presents itself you may see your membership numbers drop drastically.
