Nutrition and Fitness Franchises Must Go Hand in Hand…

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Many fitness franchises out there are not offering nutritional counseling to their customers???????  I  know the question marks make my last statement confusing, but I’m just not sure how you can have a fitness franchise that doesn’t offer nutritional counseling.  As I have said in earlier blogs I truly believe that success in the gym is 70% nutrition and 30% working out.  Meaning that no matter how hard you work out if you are eating the wrong things you will never truly obtain your fitness goals.  That’s why it is so shocking that there are fitness franchises that don’t offer any sort of diet advice to their customers/clients.

At Illuminate Gym we make it a point to offer free diet advice and guidance to all of our clients to ensure they have the best opportunity to obtain their fitness goals.  I  like to think of it like this…. Our personal training clients spend on average an hour to three hours a week at our facilities meaning that there are roughly 160 other hours in the week for our clients to undo everything they have done in the gym with their personal trainers.  What this means is we need do do some counseling to make sure that our personal training clients don’t walk away from our facilities feeling like their investment into Illuminate Gym was a waste.  I’m just not sure how other fitness franchises don’t offer the same sort of services to their customers.

Fitness Franchises and what they should provide to Franchisees…

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

What should a fitness franchise provide to their franchisees?  This is a question that we have discussed before on this blog, but it’s an important question that should be examined by each and every perspective franchisee.  The reason it’s important to ask these questions is because if you look at ‘traditional’ franchise models (food franchises) such as, Subway or McDonald’s are obviously different than fitness franchises because offer the sale of products rather than a service.  What this means is when you buy into a Subway franchise, for example, you are also receiving their specific recipes that have proven to be successful for them in other locations.  Now it’s true that a fitness franchise can offer some preferred vendors for fitness supplements and and software, but there really aren’t any proprietary receipes and cooking secrets.  So what this means is people buying into a fitness franchise are really buying a business model and learning a philosophy that has made the fitness franchise successful.

Some fitness franchises will offer you a business model and a simple circuit training program that is always consistant at all of their fitness franchise locations.  My opinion is this doesn’t constitute as a philosophy as simple circuits can be duplicated at other locations without paying an initial franchise fee.  It’s also important for you to make really certain that the software used to run the business is something unique to the fitness franchise you are getting into.  If the fitness franchise you are looking to invest in merely uses a rented software available to all other fitness facilities in the world than I would re-think your thought of buying into a fitness franchise.  Illuminate Gym is a fitness franchise but we do concede that many fitness franchises out there are ’snake oil salesman’.  Make sure the business model you are buying into offers you more than you can provide yourself especially if you are going to have to have to invest a lot into the initial franchise fee.

Thanks so much for reading our blog here at www.illuminategym.com/blog we appreciate all of your support and if you are interested in hearing about how the Illuminate Gym franchise model is different and unique from our competitors then please check us out at www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php.  Thanks again and have a healthy day!

Is Illuminate Gym a personal training franchise?

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

‘Is Illuminate Gym a personal training franchise?’ is the question we have been getting a lot from perspective franchisees all across the country.  The simple answer is ‘yes… sort of’.  It’s true that Illuminate Gym’s business is based around the one-on-one interaction between client and certified personal trainer, but there are many things that separate us from your average personal training gym such as, we offer two different Illuminate Gym models and one is far from just a personal training gym.  The point is our fitness model may seem similar on the outside but the difference lies within the walls of our facility.  We believe we have captured the future of the fitness industry within Illuminate Gym.  Don’t get me wrong though we’re not trying to re-invent the wheel, but we are trying to change the direction of the fitness industry and how it views it’s customers.  Thanks so much for reading and if you have any questions about the franchise opportunity at Illuminate Gym please give us a call or check us out at http://www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php.  Thanks so much for reading and have a healthy day!

Personal trainer comes in for personal training… She didn’t expect ‘High Oxygen Training’

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

There was a phone call into the Illuminate Gym in Denver, Colorado where someone was adamant about working out with me so of course we obliged.  Our manager was really confused about some of the questions asked over the phone because the perspective client seemed very knowledgeable about what we did at Illuminate Gym, and it was also strange that she would ask specifically for me.  I met with the young woman this Wednesday and I put her through an introductory workout that was by all accounts a bit more challenging than one of our first workouts.  However, I assumed she could handle it as she was a personal trainer.

During the workout the personal trainer had trouble keeping up with the pace of ‘High Oxygen Training’ because it challenged her strength, stamina, and cardiovascular ability all at the same time.  The workout lasted a little over 25 minutes and by the end she had found herself sitting on the ground trying to move some oxygen in and out of her lungs.  She explained this was the hardest workout of her life again proving too me that ‘High Oxygen Training’ is one of the most effective training styles for both losing weight and challenging one’s  overall fitness.  A few hours after the session the personal trainer wrote an email explaining that she didn’t think she was mentally ready for our style of training.  I guess our competitors are not keeping up with Illuminate Gym or High Oxygen Training.

Is there really any innovation in the fitness world?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Innovation?  Does it really exist in the fitness world?  This is a question I am continually asked over the course of a work week as people make their way into Illuminate Gym or call about our fitness franchise opportunities.  My professional answer is pure and simply ‘No’.  There really is no innovation in the fitness world.  I know what you’re thinking ‘how could a CEO of a fitness franchise tell us there is no innovation in the fitness industry?’  The reason is because there is no method of staying fit that didn’t exist 50 years ago.  For instance a couple of years ago I had a personal training client hand me the P90X DVD set and I took it home and tried it out.  What I found inside were movements that personal trainers and athletes have done for years.  The only real innovation when it comes to products like P90X is the marketing strategies of the companies that sell them.  Now don’t get me wrong if you are a P90X fan I am not ripping the program as I completely agree that the P90X can be a very affective way to lose weight and get fit.  However, it’s not because it’s a revolutionary way to train.

The point of this blog is to really look within our society and recognize that we have become lazy in the way that we can’t self -motivate ourselves to get more active and to focus on what we are eating on a daily basis.  As I said before p90X (as an example) can be a very affective way to lose weight and increase the strength of your heart, but if you never put those DVD’s inside of your DVD player and get off the couch they will never work.  Like plopping your credit card on the table for a gym membership you will never use also will never help you lose that extra weight.  The bottom line is being fit is a lifestyle not a habit.  It takes real discipline and hard work to maintain both your health and fitness.  There is no magic pill, exercise regimen, or piece of equipment.  There is only you and your discipline to get to the gym and the will to say ‘no’ to that donut on your receptionist’s desk at the office.  There is no magic.

At Illuminate Gym we think our business model is very beneficial to  our customers because our ‘High Oxygen Training’ is a proven system of personal training and because we are not a membership based gyms.  All of our clients have scheduled workout times that they must keep with fitness professionals.  It’s funny how easy it is to let ourselves down, but how crushed we become when we let someone else down.  Illuminate Gym is all about accountability and proven personal training principles and dieting guidelines.
