Personal Trainer to a Successful Entrepreneur at Illuminate Gym!

Friday, August 20th, 2010

I was 22 years old and I had worked extremely hard to become a successful personal trainer, but I wanted more.  I arrived at work every single day at 4:30 AM (to prepare for my 5 AM session) and I wasn’t out of the gym until 8 PM, and though I loved my job I came to important realization as a personal trainer that changed my career course forever.  The realization because I wanted to earn more money, but there was only one of me and so many hours in the day.  I also started to understand that though I loved personal training I couldn’t keep working 15 hour days 6 days a week forever.  I started to wonder, had I already reached my full earning potential in the personal training profession? Had my career reached the pinnacle of the fitness industry at 22?  ‘Maybe it’s time to find a new profession,’ I thought to myself, but every time I looked into a new career I just couldn’t imagine leaving the fitness industry.

Then one day I voiced my concerns to one of my long time clients as we measured her body fat.  She then looked at me and said, ‘David why don’t you open your own gym? I mean I don’t even like this gym.  I just come here because I like you and my personal training with you is getting me results.’  That’s exactly when I started thinking about opening my own fitness facility which would cater to individuals interested in working with personal trainers just like me.  That’s the day that Illuminate Gym became a reality for me.   I knew that many other personal trainers had tried to open personal training gyms in the past and failed, but what I have learned is being a great personal trainer is not enough for a personal training gym to succeed.  It took me a long time to perfect my model, but something I found out about myself is I’m actually a business man first and a personal trainer second.  It’s the combination of business sense and fitness passion that makes for a successful entrepreneur in the fitness industry and if you are missing one these two attributes then I’m not sure opening your own fitness facility is really the answer for you.  However, if you do have these two important attributes then maybe it’s time you put your leadership skills to the test and open your own fitness facility!

If you are considering your own fitness facility the one piece of advice I would give you is the make or break for an entrepreneur starts with all the pieces of owning a business you haven’t considered such as, the lease you are going to sign, the insurance you are going to carry, your marketing efforts to get people into the gym, development of your brand, and how to support and develop the people that work for you.  As I said before being a great personal trainer isn’t enough to be a good fitness entrepreneur.  In fact, it’s just a small piece of the journey to success.  It’s important that you understand the early development of your personal training gym or fitness facility is the most important and fragile part of your business development.  In other words, the worst thing you can possibly do is to rush to get your doors open as quickly as possible.  I have watched personal trainers rush into opening their own personal training studios multiple times and most of them end up out of business very quickly.  I had a personal trainer who once worked with me who had all the potential in the world and one day he came to me to let me know he wanted to open his own fitness facility.

‘Great, let’s put it together and build a business,’ I said because he knew I had just started offering franchise opportunities for Illuminate Gym.  His eyes dropped and I could tell he had other plans.

‘I think I want to do this on my own David,’ he said.

‘That’s fine.  Get yourself an attorney to take a look at your lease and make sure you have enough money behind you to market and to support your business while you get back on your feet,’ I told him.

‘I think I’ll be fine I already met the landlord and I think I have some good ideas to get some new clients,’ he explained.

That day he walked out of my office and within weeks he had opened his small facility in a small office building with no exposure and of course without proper legal representation the landlord had taken advantage of the young personal trainer.  Within a year both he and his business was gone even though he was a great personal trainer.  The point is if you’re a personal trainer looking to start your own business regardless if it’s a ‘one-man-shop’ or a full scale gym you need to educate yourself and take your time.  I personally would recommend looking into a fitness franchise or aligning yourself with someone who understands retail business.  Either way personal trainers need to make sure they do their due diligence before opening up to the public to ensure they give themselves their best opportunity for success.   Business can sometimes cloud our view of the fitness industry and I think you should always remember that personal trainers do what they do because we want to change people’s lives for the better and because of this the fitness industry can be the most rewarding industry in the world.

The power of conversion in the franchise world…

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

If you’re a perspective franchisee looking into opening a franchise unit there are many things to consider such as, overall cost, your passion for the business and what their existing franchisees are saying about the business model.  At illuminate gym our franchise model is one that is new to the franchise world which means there are definite pros and cons to examining a newer franchise opportunity.  Some of the pros are usually when dealing with a newer franchise model you find that you are dealing with the people who founded the original concept meaning their closer to being on the floor of your business then a staff of people who have been hired by a larger franchise to sell the model.  Many times when you speak to people at a larger franchise you will find they themselves have never owned the business you’re looking to get into.  The other pro of getting into a younger franchise is ‘USUALLY’ newer franchises are the innovators of our industry and they are the future brands of America.  Sure there are franchise brands like MacDonald’s that are going to stand the test of time however, new concepts can pave the way for a successful future for franchisees as they carry the brand into new regions.  That being said a major con of getting into a smaller less known franchise is that the brand is not developed in most regions.  If the brand is not as developed you as a franchisee have to make sure the franchisor has a plan to ensure the brand is pushed in the community you are looking to open in.  At illuminate gym we’re well aware that a lot of markets in the United States are not familiar with our brand and  that’s why we take our marketing so seriously.

That all being said it’s hard for a franchisee to look at a model he or she is not familiar with and determine if it’s a solid business model or not.  At illuminate gym we think we have an answer for you as a perspective franchisee looking in the fitness world.  Conversions…. What is a conversion franchisee you ask…. A conversion franchisee is an existing similar independent business that makes the decision to re-brand itself as a franchise unit.  Today in Denver, Colorado illuminate gym is negotiating with one of our fiercest competitors to convert them to an illuminate gym.  This should show franchisees that a franchise model is in fact a good business model.  If competitors in a region are looking to re-brand themselves to become a part of the franchise model as a whole then you know that business model is on to something.  At illuminate gym we definitely feel like our business model has some superior aspects over most of our competitors.

How does a fitness franchise match up against a food franchise?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

A fitness franchise like illuminate gym has mastered the art of creating a low cost business model for future franchisees to take advantage of.  The very first illuminate gym was opened on a shoe string budget and within 6 months illuminate gym was a money making venture.  Today we are offering our franchise opportunity to the world and it’s important to us that showcase how a fitness franchise like illuminate gym can be a lower cost than a food franchise.

1.  Build-Out Cost - A food franchise usually has a more extensive build out which could cost a franchisee as much as $50,000 more than a fitness franchise like illuminate gym.

2.  Utilities - A food franchise will always and I mean always use more electricity than a fitness franchise.  The first illuminate gym ever opened in Denver, Colorado had to pay a utilities deposit on the prior tenant which was a pizza shop.  The Utility deposit was based on 2 months of the pizza shop’s utility bill.  We had to pay over $3,000 in deposit when our monthly utility bill ranged anywhere from $60 - $100.  Remember at a restaurant you have a lot of refridgeration and ovens/burners where at illuminate gym we have a few computers, cardio equipment and the lights.

3.  Continued Product Supply - At  illuminate gym we do carry some nutrition products and supplements but none of them are perishable, meaning they don’t go bad.  At food franchises one of the major balancing  acts a franchisee will have to learn is how to order product properly because you don’t want to order too much of a perishable product because you will have a lot of waste which will impact your bottom line.  However, you also can’t order too little of these same perishable items because you can’t have customers coming into your business unable to order the items they want off of your menu because they may never come back.

Above are some reasons why we have always believe that the fitness industry is the easiest industry to get involved in.  The only issue is you have to make sure the fitness franchise you buy into can be competitive in your community.  At illuminate gym we believe the next generation of fitness franchises must be creative in their approach to the fitness experience of their customers and the way they approach their business model.  At illuminate gym we know our business model is the future of the fitness experience in America.  We are now just looking for the right entrepreneurs to help us take our franchise model to other regions of the country and the world.  If you are interested in hearing more about illuminate gym, High Oxygen Training, and our franchise opportunities please check out an informative video at www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php or give us a call at 1-877-427-2615.  Thanks so  much for reading and have a healthy day!

New Franchise or Older Franchise?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

A question we hear all the time from perspective franchisesees is what is better an older more established or a newer more aggressive franchise.  It’s an interesting question that can be answered in one simple way… There is no right answer about which franchise would be a better fit for you.  You simply have to look at both business models and make a decision that best fits your goals and aspirations.  I can tell you that illuminate gym is a franchise opportunity that is by all standards a newer member of the fitness franchise world.  However, our model is proving to be a success even over some of the older franchise models offered out there.  I’m not trying to say illuminate gym is a better business model but when dealing with a franchise opportunity you have to realize that the model is proven weather it is older or new.  If it is not a proven business model then you should run away from that franchise because there is no real franchise ‘opportunity’.

At illuminate gym this week we have been in discussion with someone who is interested in becoming a multi-unit franchisee.  He has narrowed his choices down to two different fitness franchises.  We are of course one of the fitness franchises and the other is an older and more established franchise.  Both models have their advantages and disadvantages.  Number one is when a business or franchise is heavily developed there is less of a chance of becoming a major player in the franchise where a newer more aggressive franchise may offer some larger opportunities to someone who is looking to develop a newer brand.  You can also make an argument that larger franchises have a brand that smaller ones do not.  However, in the fitness industry I can really only make the argument that ‘Curves’ is a known entity where other larger brands will not be recognizable to the average person in the public.  The reason being that the fitness industry tends to have less locations than lets just say a burger franchise may have.  So what I would say is branding is less important in the fitness franchise world because no one’s brand is developed enough to cause that many waves.  People want results from their fitness facility that’s your brand in the community…. Nothing more nothing less.

Here at illuminate gym we don’t think there is any difference between dealing with a bigger or smaller franchise.  Bigger franchises have told perspective franchisees that we are not a proven entity in the fitness world.  However, they forgot to check that we put one of their facilities out of business 2 blocks away from one of our locations.  That’s proof enough to our franchisees but the key for a a future franchisee is to look into each franchise opportunity and make an educated decision about the people you will be getting trained by and about the business model itself.  As a franchisee you must really believe in the franchise model you are about to buy into.  Thanks for reading and if you are interested in hearing more about the franchise opportunities at illuminate gym then check us out at www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php.  Have a healthy day!

Rave reviews on the video on www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Over the past week illuminate gym has had a lot of really good responses when it comes to the video posted at www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php.  The video is a short 3 minute video which gives perspective franchisees an over view of illuminate gym, our franchise opportunities and of course ‘High Oxygen Training’.  Over the past year illuminate gym has begun to offer future entrepreneurs and the personal trainers who have worked at illuminate gym since its inception, the opportunity to become their own boss by opening an illuminate gym in a new community.  It definitely has been an up hill battle getting into the business of franchising over the past year with the economic down turn and the freezing of the credit markets.  However, illuminate gym has been causing a bit of buzz of its own over the past year as people familiar with our business model in the Colorado area have begun to push the growth of our company forward.  However, within the last few days we have been receiving reviews on our franchise video over view from franchisees around the United States.  And all of them agree that the use of the video makes our business overview much easier to comprehend for franchisees looking at a variety of different companies.  In a society that now looks to be entertained it was only fitting for us to allow our future partners to watch our CEO and founder speak about the business in detail.  Thanks so much for reading and please check out the video of our CEO and founder at www.illuminategym.com/franchises.php.

illuminate gym enters into the marketing world…

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Today was an eventful day at illuminate gym in Denver, Colorado.  First we approved the video that will be shown on our corporate site by week’s end.  We also took our first step in marketing the franchise for illuminate gym.  Initially, we have decided to advertise with www.franchiseexpo.com and in the future with www.franchise.com.  It’s an exciting time as we start to move forward with our franchise opportunities and we couldn’t be more excited.  Many people are telling us to be concerned with the economic climate of our nation but now is as good as any to get our feet wet in the franchise world.  Our business model is proven here at illuminate gym and as we continue to make our way through the franchise world we hope to become even more helpful to our future franchisees.  I know I am ecstatic about our company’s development and I can’t wait to help future entrepreneurs with their own illuminate gym.  It will be an honor that illuminate gym will always cherish as we try and help others become as successful as we have become.  Thanks so much for everything and you should check out our advertisements online at www.franchiseexpo.com and www.franchise.com in the very near future.  We will keep you posted on the future locations and franchisees of illuminate gym.  Have a healthy day!
