Is there really any innovation in the fitness world?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Innovation?  Does it really exist in the fitness world?  This is a question I am continually asked over the course of a work week as people make their way into Illuminate Gym or call about our fitness franchise opportunities.  My professional answer is pure and simply ‘No’.  There really is no innovation in the fitness world.  I know what you’re thinking ‘how could a CEO of a fitness franchise tell us there is no innovation in the fitness industry?’  The reason is because there is no method of staying fit that didn’t exist 50 years ago.  For instance a couple of years ago I had a personal training client hand me the P90X DVD set and I took it home and tried it out.  What I found inside were movements that personal trainers and athletes have done for years.  The only real innovation when it comes to products like P90X is the marketing strategies of the companies that sell them.  Now don’t get me wrong if you are a P90X fan I am not ripping the program as I completely agree that the P90X can be a very affective way to lose weight and get fit.  However, it’s not because it’s a revolutionary way to train.

The point of this blog is to really look within our society and recognize that we have become lazy in the way that we can’t self -motivate ourselves to get more active and to focus on what we are eating on a daily basis.  As I said before p90X (as an example) can be a very affective way to lose weight and increase the strength of your heart, but if you never put those DVD’s inside of your DVD player and get off the couch they will never work.  Like plopping your credit card on the table for a gym membership you will never use also will never help you lose that extra weight.  The bottom line is being fit is a lifestyle not a habit.  It takes real discipline and hard work to maintain both your health and fitness.  There is no magic pill, exercise regimen, or piece of equipment.  There is only you and your discipline to get to the gym and the will to say ‘no’ to that donut on your receptionist’s desk at the office.  There is no magic.

At Illuminate Gym we think our business model is very beneficial to  our customers because our ‘High Oxygen Training’ is a proven system of personal training and because we are not a membership based gyms.  All of our clients have scheduled workout times that they must keep with fitness professionals.  It’s funny how easy it is to let ourselves down, but how crushed we become when we let someone else down.  Illuminate Gym is all about accountability and proven personal training principles and dieting guidelines.

Franchisees need to read between the lines….

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

So you’re interested in purchasing a franchise?  Perhaps it’s a fitness franchise? You look into the model and then you receive the FDD (Final Disclosure Documents).  Now the real work begins to make sure that this franchise is actually a franchise opportunity for you.  No matter how great the franchise model is you need to make sure you understand fully how much you are going to have to pay your franchisor and exactly what they are going to provide for these royalty payments.  In the franchise world we have seen a lot of FDD’s that can be a bit misleading as they pertain to royalties, which can usually cause some anger between franchisee and franchisor.  As a perspective franchisee it’s time you put your mind to asking your perspective franchisor the tough questions before you invest money into that particular franchise model.  As a franchisee you can’t sit on these questions because you are the one who is investing your hard-earned money into a franchise model.  The key word is ‘invest’.  When you buy into a franchise model you are investing into a business opportunity, so make  sure you know exactly what you are getting into before you commit to a franchise.  I would also recommend that you compare competive franchises models to each other to make sure you make the best possible investment for you.

Circuit Training in the Fitness Franchise World…

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

It all started with Curves and now Circuit Training has exploded across the fitness franchise world.  Everyone in the fitness world is looking for the next ‘Hot Fad’ that will make them rich!  It sounds great as Circuit Training limits the amount of work that a gym owner will have and it also cuts down on the expertise needed to effectively get people into shape…. or maybe get people into shape.  This common thread between Circuit Training is now crossing into smaller boxing gyms and other weight lifting gyms and the model concerns me greatly.  You see Curves came at the perfect time in American society.  Baby Boomers were getting older and many of the women in the generation had never been to the gym and quite honestly the gym was widely considered to be a man’s place.  So Curves was born and became the place for middle aged women to pursue their fitness goals without the distraction of slamming weights and grunting men.  In other words, Curves had little to do with the circuit they offered to their clients and more about the atmosphere provided to their customers.  In our opinion at Illuminate Gym circuit training is not the answer to your fitness needs as it doesn’t offer the variation to keep your muscles guessing and it also becomes monotonous and boring to customers.  At Illuminate Gym our goal as a fitness franchise has always been to provide a safe environment for clients to pursue their fitness goals but also to offer tailor made regimens that change constantly to ensure our customers have the best opportunity to obtain their fitness goals.

Variety is the spice of life and it is also the spice of a powerful workout regimen that can help you get in the best shape of your life.  If you are interested in receiving a tailor made workout regimen for yourself or if you are interested in fitness franchise opportunity then please check us out at www.illuminategym.com!  Thanks for reading and have a healthy day!

The risk of being a franchisee…

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

There are always risks involved with becoming a business owner and becoming a franchisee is no different.  Starting a new business in a new territory is always a risk and there are many factors that can influence if you become successful or not.  It is the franchisor’s job to present all of the trade secrets that have made past sites successful.  However, it is up to the business owner to ensure that the quality of service and experience is at a level that will make the community around your business continue to  support your venture and help it grow.  At Illuminate Gym we are committed to finding ways to make sure that our franchisees are successful however, we also concede that a new business owner always take s the risk of failure.  It’s cliche to say but ‘high risk is where high reward occurs’.  I can tell you from experience that becoming an entrepreneur can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life bit it also is a great challenge.  And even with the support of a franchisor it is still a challenge to develop a successful business.

Clients struggle with calories from drinks….

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Earlier this week a mystery was solved by a personal trainer at the Illuminate Gym franchise in Denver, Colorado.  This particular personal trainer had been working with a client for months and trying to get her to lose weight.  They began working out 3 times as week and he had her on a very aggressive cardiovascular training regimen, yet the weight wouldn’t come off.  So the personal trainer began taking an in depth look at this client’s diet and he couldn’t figure out why this woman was holding onto her weight.  (At the time she was 5′4 178 LBS and with 32% body fat).  This personal trainer went through all of the progressions of possibilities.  Thyroid Condition? Was she on any psychological medications?  The answer was no and no and the personal trainer with still left with no answer to the mystery of why this client could not lose any weight.  So the personal trainer went back to the diet journals, and sure they had done some tweaking to her original diet yet her calorie intake was at a level where she should have been losing weight.

Then one day earlier in the month it hit the personal trainer…. What was she drinking???

“Are you drinking any alcohol?” The personal trainer asked the client.

“No I don’t drink alcohol,” she replied.  The personal trainer was again confused by this and there didn’t seem to be any answer unless the client was lieing about her diet.

“Well I do have Starbucks twice a day is that a problem?” the client asked.

“What do you have at Starbucks?” The personal trainer asked.

“I usually have two Venti White Chocolate Mochas a day.  Could that be what the problem?”

Then is became very clear to the personal trainer.  It wasn’t a medical condition, it wasn’t how hard she was training at Illuminate Gym or even what the client was eating.  It was what she was drinking.  Venti White Chocolate Mochas from Starbucks contain over 620 calories, 27 grams of fat, and over 74 grams of sugar.  In other words, this particular client was drinking an extra 1,240 calories and 148 grams of sugar that her personal trainer was not aware of.  This is so significant for a client especially when the personal trainer was recommending that the client try and keep her caloric intake around 1500 calories a day.  The client was nearly doubling her allowed caloric intake and she didn’t even know it.  If you’re trying to get fit watch what your drinking as well as eating because it could make all the difference in the world.  By the way this client has now lost over 11 pounds this month after cutting our her two trips to Starbucks a day.  Thanks so much for reading our blog here at www.illuminategym.com!

How much does a fitness franchise cost?

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

It is commonly thought that in the fitness franchise world that fitness franchises are very expensive.  However, at Illuminate Gym we have created a franchise system that allows individuals to get into a fitness franchise for as little as $50,000 which is unheard of in our industry.  Our franchise goal is to ensure that our franchisees build successful businesses with our help.  The last thing we want for our franchisees is to dig them into such a deep hole that they are unable see there way out with their profit margins.  Our commitment to helping people change their lives for the better has been true since the day we opened the doors to clients at the first Illuminate Gym in Denver, Colorado.  We hope as a company we can help as many people as possible to realize their dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.  If you are interesting in hearing more about the franchise opportunities of owning your own boutique fitness facility please contact us directly at 1-877-427-2615 or you can check us out at www.illuminategym.com

Funding your Franchise!

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

It’s a tough time for perspective franchisees to get the funding they need to start their own Illuminate Gym.  This is a common theme across the nation as banks and the SBA is very reluctant to invest money into new business in America because of our current economic state.  However, at Illuminate Gym we are working tirelessly to help our franchisees secure the funding they need to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true.  Illuminate Gym is a company founded on hard work and the drive to make business a possibility.  When I first came up with the idea for ‘High Oxygen Training’ and Illuminate Gym I didn’t have a dollar to my name.  In fact, I didn’t even have an operating car.  However, I did have a dream and a desire to operate my own business and I made it happen.  If the will is there in your heart to be an entrepreneur we’ll find a way to make it a reality.  Just remember having a dream is easy…. We all have them, but making a dream a reality is extremely hard and there can be quite a bit of adversity along the way.  If you’re having trouble finding funding to franchise your own Illuminate Gym we can help.  It may take a little bit of time, but as an entrepreneur you have to be able to make your way through adversity in order to become successful.  I know I did and there is no reason why you can’t too.  Let us show you how.   To be a successful entrepreneur you have to first and foremost invest in yourself and your product before anyone else should invest in you.

What are these royalties about in the franchise world??

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

One of the number one questions we hear from future franchisees in the Illuminate Gym model is what are these franchise royalties for?  I think its a fair question for franchisees to ask…. I mean they have already paid an initial franchise fee to get into a franchise model so why the franchise fees??? The short answer behind closed doors is it really makes economic sense for a franchise to create some residual income for their business.  I think everybody in the business world understand that however, what should a franchise provide for these monthly royalty fees?  The answer is simple and to the point.  SUPPORT and more importantly FRANCHISE SUPPORT.  I have written many of times about the importance of franchise support provided to each and every franchisee.  This is the number one complaint that many franchisees have about franchises or development companies.  At Illuminate Gym we have no idea why a franchise wouldn’t want to offer as much support as possible.  After all, our franchisees are representing the Illuminate Gym ‘brand’ so why would we want them to struggle or be confused in any way shape or form.  That makes Illuminate Gym look bad and that is completely unacceptable.  In fact, if our franchisees had one complaint about us it’s probably that we try and offer too much franchise support.  That’s because our goal is to make sure that our franchisees know that everyone is accessible at Illuminate Gym Development Company to give our franchisees the best opportunity for success.  As I have said before, the success of Illuminate Gym is directly connected to the success of each of our franchisees.

Another fitness franchise bites the dust….

Monday, April 5th, 2010

My office sits in the back of the first illuminate gym franchise and I’ve watched as other gyms have opened their doors around us.  Some of them were small personal training gyms, some of them were larger membership gyms and I have watched over the past four years as many of them have closed their doors for the last time.  Today another fitness franchise just up the road from us who offers 24 hour access with a membership card closed their doors today.  I was told by one of my clients who used both facilities for her fitness needs as we are not merely a membership gym.  She now has the daunting task of trying to get that 3 year commitment of money back from the franchise owner…. Good luck because we all know that this is not going to happen.  This latest casualty is another result of 24 Hour Fitness as membership franchises cannot compete with the mega corporate gyms while illuminate gym offers a second option that offers something that the corporate gyms cannot.  I am just so shocked by entrepreneurs who are looking into getting into the fitness industry.  I just can’t grasp how they would think that their amenities can compete with larger gyms like 24 Hour Fitness.  At illuminate gym we understand that the membership gym is not the right avenue for fitness franchisees as the market is saturated and extremely expensive to compete in.

At illuminate gym our brand of working out seperates us from all of our competitors.  ‘High Oxygen Training’ and our modified gym culture makes us something completely different from membership gyms.  I remember before my first facility opened I was telling a friend of mine who was a GM of a Bally Total Fitness about my concept and he laughed at me and said, ’smaller gyms will never compete with larger gyms like Bally’s.’  Years later we bagan to grow and Bally Total Fitness filed for bankrupcy to re-organize and my friends club went out of business.  He now is trying to find a way to open his own illuminate gym….. Interesting.  If you would like to check out the franchise opportunities here at illuminate gym check us out at www.illuminategym.com or you can give us a call at 1-877-427-2615.  Have a healthy day!
