Laziness = an unhealthy future….

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

We live in an unhealthy society today where the majority of us sit in front of computer all day and we feed ourselves to excess usually with foods that are filled with saturated fats, sugars and too much salt.  The result is unhealthy habits that are leading to our rising obesity statistics and illnesses related to America’s new found lifestyle.  Then on top of these horrible habits Americans are getting lazy.  Now don’t get me wrong personal training and Illuminate Gym are built on building ‘liability’ into people’s pursuit of fitness.  After all, 80% of all people who buy simple gym memberships will not return to the gym within 4 months.

Either way the point is with horrible eating habits and a lack of motivation for fitness it shouldn’t be a suprise that we could see the first generation who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.  That’s a scary statistic to think about isn’t it?  The point is that people need to start focusing on what they put in their bodies on a daily basis and also they need to get out of that chair they have grown so accustomed to sitting in and get active!  It doesn’t matter what you do, but you have to make time to burn the calories your consuming and make sure you’re not taking in too many calories.  It’s a  very easy thing to take care of ourselves, yet for some reason we make it very hard for ourselves to take that step to ensure we have a healthy future.  Instead we make investments for a healthy financial future, yet we don’t plan for a healthy future???? That doesn’t make any sense at all does it??

It’s time to get out there and start working out for a better future and start looking at the food you are eating and not just tasting it.  Have a healthy day and check us out at www.illuminategym.com!

Women are always concerned about building too much muscle…

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

As personal trainers we always hear women say one key thing, ‘I  don’t want to build too much muscle while working out.’  This is a common concern of many clients who are  interested  in hiring a personal trainer and you can almost see it in their faces as they walk into the gym and they see weight equipment…. All  of sudden their eyes open and they start to have visions of them walking on a stage in a string bikini looking like a professional bodybuilder.  ‘I don’t want to build too much muscle… I don’t want  to look like  a man… I don’t want my arms to get bigger…’ starts racing through these women’s minds.

If you are a person who is thinking about hiring a personal trainer don’t be concerned about building muscle.  Many people have no idea how hard it truly is to build muscle.  Now there is some truth that some of us have more of a genetic disposition to build muscle.  However, it’s still a tough for a woman, or anyone for that matter, to build a substantial amount of muscle tissue.  You see the issue is that our society has been jaded by the use of steroids.  Steroids have actually changed our perception of what the human body is really capable of achieving either through muscle growth or human performance.  Many women and men have seen photographs of bodybuilders and athletes who have changed their body’s chemistry to obtain muscle mass and they are convinced that they could look like that by training with a personal  trainer twice a week.

The honest truth is to build a substantial amount of muscle you need to make sure you are eating enough calories and the right sort of calories to  gain muscle.  To  lose weight you obviously need to eat less calories than you consume on a daily basis and to build muscle you have to eat more calories than you are burning.  That being said a ‘bodybuilder’ must make sure that  he/she is getting enough calories from fat, carbohydrates, and of course protein.  Then it just takes a lot of hard work and some help with some genetics.  Some  people struggle for years just to gain 5 pounds of muscle.

The  other side of this argument is what the heck is so bad about gaining muscle?  Did you know that  muscle burns 10 calories a day by just living in your body?  That’s right.  You see fat is not a living tissue, it’s merely storage, but muscle on the other hand is a living tissue that burns calories every day.  So in my mind gaining muscle is actually a good thing because the more you have the more efficient and thermogenic your body becomes.  And  don’t worry about gaining bulky muscles ladies.  It’s really hard to do.  Thanks so much for reading and have a healthy day!

A reminder of why health is important comes into Illuminate Gym!

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

He was 33 years old and he walked into the Illuminate Gym located in Denver, Colorado to meet with a personal trainer.  He was overweight but the youthful look on his face made it hard to believe that this gentleman wasn’t healthy.  However, as he sat down with a personal trainer at Illuminate Gym he explained that he had suffered a heart attack 6 months before because of a poor diet that consisted of too much fat, salt, sugar, alcohol and of course bulk of his ‘nutrtion’ was coming from fast-food.  On top of a horrible diet he worked tirelessly behind a computer watching domestic and foreign stock markets in an attempt to make the safe bet to make investors millions of dollars.  The problem was he had forgotten about himself and his own health.

“I made pretty good money and unfortunately I forgot about myself and my health.  I bought beautiful suits, nice cars, and a nice house,” he explained.  Then it happened… A severe heart attack hit this particular client at age 33 and he was faced with the reality that he had focused on all the wrong things in life.

“I just feel blessed I have a second chance to live a healthier life and I’m hoping Illuminate Gym’s personal trainers can help,” he said.  He’s right he does have a second chance and his focus is now on himself.  This client helped me take a look at what we do day-to-day and put it into perspective.  I always say that investing in your health and fitness is not a waste of money even though too many believe it is.  Today I realize that we have living proof that working too hard, eating poorly, and not working out can lead you to a successful career and an early death where you will not be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Circuit Training in the Fitness Franchise World…

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

It all started with Curves and now Circuit Training has exploded across the fitness franchise world.  Everyone in the fitness world is looking for the next ‘Hot Fad’ that will make them rich!  It sounds great as Circuit Training limits the amount of work that a gym owner will have and it also cuts down on the expertise needed to effectively get people into shape…. or maybe get people into shape.  This common thread between Circuit Training is now crossing into smaller boxing gyms and other weight lifting gyms and the model concerns me greatly.  You see Curves came at the perfect time in American society.  Baby Boomers were getting older and many of the women in the generation had never been to the gym and quite honestly the gym was widely considered to be a man’s place.  So Curves was born and became the place for middle aged women to pursue their fitness goals without the distraction of slamming weights and grunting men.  In other words, Curves had little to do with the circuit they offered to their clients and more about the atmosphere provided to their customers.  In our opinion at Illuminate Gym circuit training is not the answer to your fitness needs as it doesn’t offer the variation to keep your muscles guessing and it also becomes monotonous and boring to customers.  At Illuminate Gym our goal as a fitness franchise has always been to provide a safe environment for clients to pursue their fitness goals but also to offer tailor made regimens that change constantly to ensure our customers have the best opportunity to obtain their fitness goals.

Variety is the spice of life and it is also the spice of a powerful workout regimen that can help you get in the best shape of your life.  If you are interested in receiving a tailor made workout regimen for yourself or if you are interested in fitness franchise opportunity then please check us out at www.illuminategym.com!  Thanks for reading and have a healthy day!

Fitness franchise sells something more….

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Earlier tonight I met with an entrepreneur who has developed quite a product and business model and he was also quite impressed with the illuminate gym ‘model’.  He was impressed because most of the fitness franchises  he was familiar with sold nothing but a facility like any other gym.  At illuminate gym we try very hard to keep the vision of our facility away from the ’status quo’.  I personally have been involved with the fitness industry for a long time and I have seen many issues with membership facilities because as soon as a ‘mega gym’ moves in you see a drastic drop in membership.  The key is keeping people connected with people rather than connected to a place.   That’s the key to building and maintaining a fitness facility.

Recently illuminate gym has looked at the prospect of working with an existing fitness facility in Monument, Colorado and they have run into this very issue.  In the early 1990’s they were the only fitness facility in town.  However, in the last few years another fitness franchise and a new YMCA has moved into town which has drastically impacted the membership sales and retention at the facility.  At illuminate gym we show gym owners how to offer something different by using our creative ways to get in touch with the community and our ‘High Oxygen Training’ principles.  The point is that having the best and brightest facility is not the key to success in the fitness industry.  It’s finding a way to get people to invest in your fitness staff.  It’s just people helping people.  It’s as simple as that.

illuminate gym franchise blog catches some insults…

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

I  wold like to reiterate our stance on tanning salons.  We have no problem with people building successful businesses based around tanning beds.  We just don’t believe that a franchise who specializes in tanning should sell themselves as if they’re in some way a healthy business.  Now it is true that people with psoriasis or other skin issues can benefit from drying out their skin via tanning beds.  However, Vitamin D should not be used as a selling point for tanning salons in any way shape or form…. Or at least as long as we have sun burning in our solar system.  To all of the tanning salon lovers who wrote on the illuminate gym franchise blog I can’t post comments with such language…. And please understand that I have used a tanning bed before… I have also eaten a cheeseburger with fries and I even tried chewing tobacco when I was in High School when pressured by older baseball players during a single game.  These are all things I have done and none of them were really healthy for me.

We are sorry here at illuminate gym for rubbing people the wrong way in the tanning salon franchise world but we take health and fitness very seriously and we just don’t believe the public or future franchisees should be lied to about the facts.  Thanks for reading about illuminate gym and our franchise opportunities.  Have a healthy day!

Tanning Salon Franchise tries to sell Vitamin D???

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

We understand  here at illuminate gym that not all franchises are selling a healthy product or service.  In fact, I would venture to say that most franchises sell unhealthy products because the purpose of franchises are to make money rather than help people’s lives.  At illuminate gym we feel we can do both by helping people become the best they can be with our ‘High Oxygen Training’.  However, today I found an unnamed tanning salon franchsie that is trying to sell tanning as if it was a healthy thing that we all should be doing.  The slogan literally said get your Vitamin D for the day here.  I was shocked to see the a company literally was trying to sell  cancer causing ultraviolet rays as something healthy for the human body.  It’s true that we can get Vitamin D from ultraviolet rays from the sun.  However, scientific studies show that spending 15-20 minutes outside during the day gives you enough Vitamin D for an entire day.

Please don’t misunderstand me because I do think it’s fine that this company is selling tanning salons as a franchise.  I just think it’s rediculous to sell their product as if it were healthy.  What if MacDonald’s started using the slogan ‘Eat a Big Mac a day to get a portion of protein your body needs’.  What MacDonald’s would be failing to tell you is all the sodium, cholesterol, sugars, and saturated fats that come along with that Big Mac.  And MacDonald’s knows how rediculous this is as well so they stick to making food that tastes good rather than acting as if it is healthy.  Maybe cigarette companies should hire this tanning salon franchise to help them with a new pitch to sell their poduct.  I can see it now… ‘Cigarettes are committed to fighting the obesity in America because they are in fact an appetite suppresent.’

At illuminate gym we understand that it must be hard to package a product or a franchise concpet when your product or service could cause cancer, heart disease, obesity and even death.  However, a tanning salon should not act like sitting in a tanning bed is in some way a daily vitamin because it’s just not.  At illuminate gym we’ll continue to grow our franchise concpet around health, fitness and helping people become a better version of themselves.  After all, there is no excuse to not be the best you can be.    Have a healthy day.
