Illuminate Gym was started on the principle that personal trainers should have the opportunity to become their own boss by joining the Illuminate Gym franchise model. That’s not to say that a business man wouldn’t be able to succeed at owning an Illuminate Gym, but we do offer our franchise opportunities to both fitness professionals and perspective franchisees who are interested in the fitness industry.
Personal trainers have been faced with a tough issue that plagues most individuals in a service industry which is, ‘there is only one of me, and 24 hours in a day.’ This dynamic makes it very clear that there is so much money that a personal trainer can make and if they miss work well then the revenue stream will definitely slow down and eventually that stream will turn into a drought. I personally started my actual fitness career (I did work in high school at the front desk of many larger membership gyms) as a personal trainer and I became very successful. In no time I had become the highest producing personal trainer in the whole gym, but I found that I was working from 5 AM - 9 PM. Now don’t get me wrong because anyone who truly knows me is reading that last sentence and saying to themselves, ‘David Sedbrook you still work that hard,’ which by many accounts is true however, as a personal trainer I had hit the ceiling of my profession at 24 and I had no where to go except down. That’s when the ‘Illuminate Gym model’ was born. Today it is my goal to provide business people and fitness professionals the opportunity to work in a low overhead business with high margins. Within our franchise model we actually promote personal trainers’ businesses and if personal trainers wish to build their businesses within the franchise model then franchisees can work themselves into an area developer position within our franchise development.

It all started with Curves and now Circuit Training has exploded across the fitness franchise world. Everyone in the fitness world is looking for the next ‘Hot Fad’ that will make them rich! It sounds great as Circuit Training limits the amount of work that a gym owner will have and it also cuts down on the expertise needed to effectively get people into shape…. or maybe get people into shape. This common thread between Circuit Training is now crossing into smaller boxing gyms and other weight lifting gyms and the model concerns me greatly. You see Curves came at the perfect time in American society. Baby Boomers were getting older and many of the women in the generation had never been to the gym and quite honestly the gym was widely considered to be a man’s place. So Curves was born and became the place for middle aged women to pursue their fitness goals without the distraction of slamming weights and grunting men. In other words, Curves had little to do with the circuit they offered to their clients and more about the atmosphere provided to their customers. In our opinion at Illuminate Gym circuit training is not the answer to your fitness needs as it doesn’t offer the variation to keep your muscles guessing and it also becomes monotonous and boring to customers. At Illuminate Gym our goal as a fitness franchise has always been to provide a safe environment for clients to pursue their fitness goals but also to offer tailor made regimens that change constantly to ensure our customers have the best opportunity to obtain their fitness goals.

Monument, Colorado currently has 2 membership gyms in it. One is a YMCA and the other is an Anytime Fitness. Now both of these options are viable fitness options for the people of Monument, Colorado. However, here at illuminate gym we see a hole in the fitness industry that can be filled by illuminate gym and ‘High Oxygen Training’. We are currently working very hard with a perspective franchisee in the market and we are confident that we can make a huge splash in the Monument market very soon. Many people were concerned about our choice here at illuminate gym to move into the Greenwood Village, Colorado market. This is true because of all of the established competition in the area with such clubs as the Greenwood Village Athletic Club. However, after a month of working in the region Taj Leon and his illuminate gym staff have exceeded every one’s expectations with their success. There first month’s revenue was over 10% higher than we had expected to see and their ability to continually get new customers in the door and keep them has all of us here at illuminate gym very excited about our future in Greenwood Village, Colorado. A question we hear a lot from perspective franchisees is why should someone pay an initial franchise fee for a business like Illuminate Gym? First and foremost Illuminate Gym has one of the lowest initial franchise fees for a franchise of its size. Also our franchise fee is based on numbers that prove to be beneficial to our franchisees because with our contacts with insurance companies, exercise equipment dealers, and our legal councel we ensure that our franchisees will save at least as much as our initial franchise fee is. We also are always willing to show perspective franchisees how our model will save them money over starting their own fitness facility.

So you’re interested in opening your own fitness franchise but you’re not sure what direction to go in. I’ve been the fitness industry for a long time and the one consistent I can tell you is you have to be able to diversify your product in such a way that it will never be considered taboo or out of style. There are a lot of ‘trendy’ fitness franchises we have watched pop up over the past few years and as a perspective franchisee you have to make sure that the franchise model you are looking into will have some lasting power. You also can’t back yourself into a corner with one avenue of achieving fitness like a boxing gym. We have seen over the past 10 years that boxing and kick boxing has lost its favor with the general public which makes it harder and harder to ensure success. We have even seen that larger fitness franchises like LA Boxing has had to adapt their boxing principles to the MMA craze in the United States, but the question is what happens if MMA goes out of style. At illuminate gym our franchise model is based around variety in a workout. First and foremost we stick with the basics in our model… Gyms have been around for over 60 years and they’re not going anywhere. Now many of you boxing enthusiasts are about to jump all over this blog by saying that boxing gyms have been around just as long. That is true however, you have to know that boxing gyms were meant for serious boxers and wayward adolescent boys until recent times. Boxing gyms were for boxing not losing weight and getting more fit.
Back to my point…. At illuminate gym we are able to accommodate a lot of different types of fitness avenues such as, cardiovascular training, Pilates, and yes even boxing. In fact, our newest franchisee is a former professional boxer as was his brother. He has been involved with boxing gyms his whole life yet he sees the power in working with a gym with as many options as illuminate gym offers. When the illuminate gym logo was born in 2005 it was looked at by many people in such a way that it may be to simple for our objectives. “It looks too generic,” some would say. And there is some truth that the simplicity of our logo is apparent. It says ‘gym’ with a sunburst. However, rest assured that though our logo seems so simplistic it was very deliberate in our company’s franchise development for two very important reasons.
1. The first reason is because we wanted to ensure that when our logo ends up on a sign there is no doubt what kind of business we are. And trust me our facilities on the busiest streets in America are seen and understood in the slightest of moments. At illuminate gym we feel this is very important because your sign can be one of your greatest marketing tools especially early on in your business development. If you logo is to busy or complex that split second when you need to convey a message to your perspective customers could be lost.
2. The second reason we designed the illuminate gym logo was to ensure that we would have the opportunity to spread the illuminate gym franchise internationally. The word ‘gym’ and a tribal sun translates into every country in the world. Today we are currently in conversations about bringing our franchise opportunity to India and the Middle East. It has always been our goal to help entrepreneurs all around the world to create low-cost fitness franchises to help their communities become more fit while making a profit too.

Illuminate Gym has been working for the past month to get registered to sell franchises in the state of Michigan. Many people have thought that growing a business in the state of Michigan may be a tough task but at Illuminate Gym we feel there is a real opportunity for our franchise model to grow in Michigan because of all the real estate leverage we feel we have in the state. We also see large communities for people who really care about fitness in the state which is ideal for a franchise like Illuminate Gym. Lood for us to move into the state very soon and hopefully in other communities around the Mid-West.
